About Social Enterprises - Shulammite Paul
Social
enterprise development is an aspect of entrepreneurship that applies generic
business principles in solving social issues. The emphasis is on solving social
problems, however, instead of adopting a humanitarian model that involves
giving a man the fish, social enterprises focus on giving back to the community
according to its need in a sustainable way that involves teaching the man to
fish.
A social enterprise is a revenue-generating business with
social objectives whose surpluses are reinvested- for that purpose- in the
business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to deliver
profit to shareholders and business owners. Basically, when a business is
focused on doing well for the community and at the same
time making enough profit to be self-sufficient, we
are talking about a social enterprise.
